The DeScrolls are an outgrowth of the Phenoms. They are watercolor / mixed-media works in a long, horizontal format intended to highlight and slow the time required to experience the entire painting. The works include abstracted, graphic, representational, and indexical imagery. Scrolls traditionally are viewed in small sections limited by the holder’s arm span. The DeScrolls extend or complicate the element of time by unraveling the scroll, making it difficult to see it in its entirety at one glance. Viewing a DeScroll at a distance close enough to take in its diverse elements and surfaces – experiencing the entirety of the work – requires moving across its surface, making it a durational encounter. This “ambulatory looking” entices the viewer to think about seeing in a different way, metaphorically and proportionally; our human part to the environment’s whole.
